SPECIALTIES at OSENU

Specialists in the hydrometeorological direction have been trained at the University since the first day of its establishment as a higher education institution. To date, training of Bachelors, Masters, Doctors of Philosophy and Doctors of Sciences in the area of Hydrometeorology is concentrated in the specialty 103 ‘Earth Sciences’ on the basis of the research and educational Hydrometeorological Institute, the Faculty of Master and Postgraduate Training and the Sub-Faculty of Military Training.

Training of students in the specialty 103 ‘Earth Sciences’ is conducted according to the educational programmes of:

Meteorology, Agrometeorology and Economics of the Climate Change;
Hydrology, Oceanolography and Water Resources Management;
Management of Hydrometeorological Activities;
At the second level of the higher education, Master of Science in the specialty 103 ‘Earth Sciences’, the University conducts training of specialists in the specializations of:

Meteorology and Climatology, with the graduation office of the Department of Meteorology and Climatology;
Hydrology-the Department of Land Hydrology;
Oceanology and Hydrography – the Department of Oceanology and Marine Nature Management;
Agrometeorology – the Department of Agrometeorology and Agrometeorological
Training of military hydrometeorologists on the basis of the Sub-Faculty of Military Training is carried out under the training programmes for permanent officers as well as officers of the reserve. It is under the specialty 103 ‘Earth sciences’ that MOS (military occupational specialty code) specialties ‘Organization of Provision of Meteorological and Geophysical support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine’,

‘Processing and Analysis of Hydrometeorological (Meteorological) and Geophysical Information’ are licensed.

The Hydrometeorological Institute has been cooperating with the UNO Specialized Agency, the World Meteorological Organization, under the Voluntary Assistance Programme. Currently, active work is being done to establish a regional training center on the basis of the Hydrometeorological Institute of Odessa State Environmental University, in accordance with the requirements of the World Meteorological Organization.

Training of higher education specialists in environmental science at Odessa State Environmental University began over 25 years ago. Experts in environmental protection, environmental inspectors, researchers for numerous organizations and institutions, research centers, industrial enterprises, nature protection inspections and departments of environmental protection have been trained on the basis of the Faculty of Environmental Protection, the Faculty of Environmental Science and Economics and the Faculty of Master and Postgraduate Training at OSENU.

Training of Bachelor degree students in the specialty 101 ‘Ecology’ is conducted in accordance with the educational programmes of:

Environmental Science and Environmental Protection;
Hydroecology and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems;
Environmental Control and Audit;
Environmental Policy and
At the second level of higher education. Master of Science in the specialty 101 ‘Ecology’, the University has provided training of specialists in the specializations of:

Environmental Protection with the graduation office of the Department of Environmental Science and Environmental Protection;
Environmental Safety – the Department of Environmental Science and Environmental Protection;
Agroecology – the Department of Agrometeorology and Agrometeorological Forecasting;
Hydroecology – the Department of Hydroecology and Water Research;
Environmental Control and Audit – the Department of Environmental Law and Control;
Reserve Science – the Department of Environmental Law and Control.

Training of specialists in the specialty of’Economics’ at the Odessa State Environmental University is carried out on the basis of the Department of Economics of Nature Management.

The ability to discern and determine specific features pertaining to particular manifestations of economic and environmental relations and specificity in operation of economic laws in the field of nature management, to identify environmentally sound priorities for the social and economic development of the society and to use the fundamental economic regularities and mechanisms in managing resource use processes, with the environmental factor taken account of; to analyze the occurrence of environmental and economic problems and conditions for provision of sustainable nature management; to develop options for management decisions and justify their selection on the basis of the criteria for socio-economic and environmental efficiency, to evaluate the efficiency of innovation and investment projects under the conditions of uncertainty are the principal professional competencies that OSENU graduates master under the educational and professional programme of 051 ‘Economics’.

Education of the Master level in this area is carried out under the specialty of ‘Economics of the Environment and Natural Resources’ and provides training of highly qualified specialists who are aware of the importance of greening the production for economic development and possess up-to-date knowledge in the field of economics of the environment and natural resources.

Training of Bachelor and Master students in the specialty of 073 ‘Management’ is carried out on the basis of the Faculty of Environmental Science and Economics and its graduation office of the Department of Environmental Management.

At the first – the Bachelor level of higher education in the specialty of’Management’ the following educational programmes have been introduced at the University:

Management of Organizations and Administration;
Human Resource Management
Training of the Master students in Management is carried out on the basis of the Faculty of Master and Postgraduate training in two specializations:

Management of Nature Protection Activities;
Management of Organizations and Administration
The basis of training specialists in this field is formed by the disciplines of the economic-and-administrative and the law cycles which, combined with the study of special courses, provide an appropriate level of specialized training in management under the changing conditions of socio-economic growth with modem thinking and a complex of specialized knowledge in the effective management of an organization under the present- day conditions.

Training specialists of Bachelor and Master students in the area of 281 ‘Public Management and Administration’ is provided on the basis of the graduation office of the Department of Management of Environmental Activities.

Higher education seekers in the specialty of ‘Public Management and Administration’ have the opportunity to be trained in one of the two specializations:

Business Administration;
Project
Public Management and Administration is to provide students with the necessary professional competence to work effectively both for and with the bodies of state administration; the possibility of further independent research and practical work in any sphere of activity (public service, business, nonprofit organizations, etc.).

The core for training specialists in public management and administration is formed by the disciplines of administrative, socio-economic and law cycles, which, combined with the study of special courses, provide an appropriate level of professional training for the graduates to enable their work in an executive authority, local government, social organizations and contribute to socially acceptable level of administrative services in terms of openness, transparency, accountability and professionalism.

Integration into the global processes of finding solutions to the topical environmental issues, adaptation of national environmental law to the legal system of the EU, harmonization with environmental law in other foreign countries, shaping up new strategic principles of the National Environmental Policy requires training of highly skilled professionals who are able to participate in the improvement of the system of environmental law and its individual sectors, further environmentally responsible decisions, organize effective implementation of the regulations of environmental law into environmental, law enforcement and human rights practice.

Training of Master students in the specialty of ‘Law’, specialization of’Environmental Policy and Law’ at Odessa State Environmental University is conducted by the graduation office of the Department of Environmental Law and Control.

The core for training of the specialists is formed by the disciplines of environmental, law and economic-and- administrative cycles that ensure appropriate level of basic higher and specialised education.

Educational-and-professional programme of ‘Environmental

Policy and Law’ of the Master level include, as expected outputs, comprehension and assessment of a wide range of environmental problems in terms of intellectual and practical skills and professional competences.

Training of the students with focus on the current trends in Information Technology at OSENU is provided by three special departments of the Faculty of Computer Science: Department of Information Technology, Department of Information Science and Department of Automated Systems for Environmental Monitoring.

Bachelor and Master students in the specialty of ‘Computer Science and Information Technology’ have the opportunity to undergo professional training under three specializations (programmes):

Geographic Information Systems and Technologies;
Internet Programming;
Computer-Aided Environmental and Economical Monitoring
Many graduates of educational institutions with the qualification of Junior Specialist have an opportunity to take a course of training under the programme in Intelligent Information Systems at the first cycle of higher education, Bachelor of Science.

Development of the components of computer- controlled systems, including the ones of information processing and management, computer-aided design, software for personal computers, automated text and graphic processing, geographic information technologies, being the principal constituents of professional activity of the experts who graduated from the Faculty.

Training of Bachelor and Master students in the specialty of ‘Environmental Protection Technologies’ is aimed at the students’ gaining the knowledge of methods and means of protection of the environment, the ability to apply modern sector-appropriate technology to protect ecosystems. The programme is aimed at training of professional experts who are able to effectively solve practical and theoretical problems related to the protected elements of the environment.

At the first level of higher education training of Bachelor students in the specialty of ‘Environmental

In course of the training the students acquire competence in: development of technologies for protection of the environment from pollution and systems of environmental monitoring; modelling and assessment of environmental risks and creation of optimum, sustainable and scientifically substantiated forms for ensuring environmental security through the use of modern technologies developed to protect and restore the environment.

Ukraine possesses marine waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, hundreds of thousands of hectares of highly productive brackish estuaries and lagoons, freshwater lakes and reservoirs, large river systems that can successfully develop domestic fisheries and aquaculture.

Training of Bachelor and Master students in the specialty 207 ‘Water Bioresources and Aquaculture’ is provided by the graduation office of the Department of Water Bioresources and Aquaculture at the Faculty of Nature Protection under the two specializations (programmes):

Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Use of Hydrobioresources (Fishery Protection);
Environmental-and-Economic Management of Fisheries and
In course of the training the students obtain theoretical background and gain up-to-date practical skills in conservation and sustainable use of water biological resources, organization and management of fishery production complexes alongside with studying the methods and technologies of fishery and aquaculture.

Training under the specialty of ‘Tourism’ is mainly provided by OSENU graduation office of the Faculty of Environmental Science and Economics, namely the Department of Environmental Economics.

Training of the specialists is based on the disciplines of socio-humanitarian, natural scientific and economic cycles which, combined with the study of special courses and practical training, provide the appropriate level of training for the BA students for a degree in Tourism.

Applicants of higher education under the specialty 242 ‘Tourism’ have an opportunity to be trained under one of the two study programmes:

Green (Responsible) Tourism;
Tourist
The ability to implement tourism projects, develop an environmentally friendly tourism product, conduct marketing research in tourism, provide legal support of tourist activity, make assessment and analysis of economic and environmental activities, financial and economic status of a travel company, analyze efficiency of resource management of travel industry on the principles of sustainable development, make reasoned management decisions, work out a strategy for development of a travel company with regard to environmental factors are the major professional competences, which are mastered by the OSENU graduates under the educational-and-professional programme in Tourism.
