Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova

Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova was under the Decision of the Government of the Republic of Moldova “On science and innovation sphere’s infrastructure optimization measures” nr. 1326 of 14 December 2005 by uniting National Institute of Ecology of Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and Institute of Geography of ASM.
Geographical science development in the Republic of Moldova began in 1946, when the Economical and Geographical Sector on Moldavian base of scientific investigations of Academy of Sciences of USSR was created. In 1950 it was transformed in Geography and Cartography Sector within Economy Sector (from 1960 – Institute of Economy) of Moldavian branch of Academy of Sciences of USSR; in 1965 the Geography Section of Academy of Sciences of MSSR was created, which gained the status of Institute of Geography of AS of Moldova due its actuality, practical and theoretical importance of investigations, scientific potential.
National Institute of Ecology was founded in 1990 on the basis of Science, Monitoring and Ecological norms Direction of Department of Environmental protection, wood and experimental stations with experimental lot “Harbovet”; technologic and project center, scientific sections of reservations “Codru” and “Iagorlic”, Plant Protection Section from Straseni, Pedological stations from Bender. From 1992 Institute was under double subordination of Environmental Protection Department (later – Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources) and Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
Principal effort in Institute of Geography development belongs to m. c. M. Radul, dr. in geography V. Proca, dr.hab. in geography A. Levadniuc, academicians Tatiana Constantinov and A. Ursu; and in National Institute of Ecology – m. c. I. Dediu, who was also its founder.
Scientific potential
85 scientific researchers, including 1 titled members of ASM, 1 Corresponding Member, 7 Doctors Habilitat and 34 Doctors of Science.
The main research areas of the Institute are:
• Dynamics and evolution of natural and anthropogenic geo- and ecosystems in regional, local and trans-boundary levels;
• Elaboration of Geographical Informational system of environment and natural resources;
• Integral monitoring of environment and ecological restoration.
